Striking down a cadet
The unpatriot act? Patti LaBelle in a soulful of trouble after Bush airportattack video triggers HPD review
Some people salute our troops. Others simply thank them for their service. Still others honor them by sporting the trashiest swimwear possible.
Patti LaBelle? She has her henchmen beat the hell out of them. Allegedly.
Houstonian Richard King, a cadet in his final year at West Point, had just arrived back into town via Bush Intercontinental Airport. He was headed home for spring break, chatting on his cell with his brother, probably coordinating a curbside pickup.
That's when, according to the civil suit that King has filed, the High Priestess of Good Vibrations noticed the out-of-uniform cadet — meandering about with his phone to his ear. King allegedly ambled toward the spot on the sidewalk where LaBelle's worldly goods sat outside her ride, and she deemed King unworthy of being as close to her luggage as he was.
So LaBelle lowered the window of her limousine and told her bodyguards to sic him, the lawsuit contends.
And bash him up they did. The bodyguards punched the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Army defensive back in the head until he fell to the ground, bloodied with a concussion. A surveillance video at the airport shows King struggling to get up after the attack, falling to the pavement several times.
When it was all said and done, he was hauled off in an ambulance to get staples put in his head (after which video of the incident shows some illustrious Houston police officers posing for photos with LaBelle — next to King's pool of blood).
KTRK Ch. 13's Miya Shay is now reporting that the airport division of the Houston Police are reviewing how its officers handled the case.
King had a few drinks on the plane, he admitted. Were they enough to make him lunge for LaBelle's luggage? We're skeptical.
Can we be honest, bratty Patti? The kid is 23. He thinks Christina Aguilera wrote "Lady Marmalade," and doesn't know the difference between you and Aretha Franklin. Being a 67-year-old dance-hall diva has it drawbacks.
We think it's pretty safe to assume that King didn't know who you were at all, Patti, despite your ostentatious mode of transportation or your overeager lapdogs.
But he'll be getting to know LaBelle intimately in the coming months — months in which he's been suspended from West Point for the incident. King filed that lawsuit against LaBelle, her bodyguards, and Bush Intercontinental on Wednesday for assault and negligence.
Want to see a high priestess get her comeuppance? Stay tuned.
In the meantime, have a look at the airport surveillance video for yourself. The action begins at 1:34.
