It's hot out and you need frigid sugar: A guide to Houston's best snow cones
The summer heat is fast becoming oppressive, and let's face it: Ice cream is just not gonna cut it. Not even frozen yogurt.
No, spare me the dairy — I demand a snow cone.
If your frigid sugar cravings are anything like ours, Houston offers an assortment of places where you can cool off and amp up. Sugar high, anyone?
Tampico — Not to be confused with the (also fabulous) seafood joint, Tampico the snow cone joint is in the Heights on Main Street and serves up over-sized snow cones for under a dollar. These goodies tower over the top of your styrofoam and if shaved ice n' syrup isn't your thing, there's a variety of other Mexican treats.
MAM's House of Ice — By far the stand with the most loyal and bountiful social media followers, MAM's is also in the Heights (neighborhood, I heart you) on the corner of 20th and Rutland.
Tropical Chill — It's out in Deer Park, but it's existed since '93 and boasts a range of flavors including "Tiger's Blood" and "Batman" in addition to your more classic, "Tutti Frutti."
Mango Beach— We Heights folk love our snowballs. Mango Beach on White Oak (across from the baseball park on the Woodlands side) serves traditional raspas. You can't miss it — look for the neon green and yellow shack next to the Little Buddy corner store.
