Better late than never: Lights out tonight for downtown Houston
UGGs, acid wash jeans, frozen yogurt: All trends that were late bloomers in our bustling burg. Recent studies reveal that eco-consciousness belongs on that list, too.
And so it makes sense that the global trend of turning out lights for a period to raise awareness of global warming is arriving fashionably late as well. Today's "Lights Out Houston" is a city-wide event in which the skyline will flip the switch, and is perfectly timed, one day after Earth Day.
Since it's already a grayish day, "Lights Out Houston" brings a whole new meaning to TGIF in the Energy Capital of the World - but the scheduled electricity shutdown is at 10 p.m. Other than meager janitorial service, the 35 million square feet of office space downtown wouldn't be so bright at that time anyhow.
Have no fear, though: when asked, downtown haunts like Hearsay Gastro Lounge and Red Cat Jazz Cafe weren't even aware of tonight's flicker fest.
The bright idea brings to mind another electricity-minded mistake from the past:
