Texas women power! Houston ranked No. 2 in country for female businesses
As the overall U.S. economy trudges towards a slow recovery, the 2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report shows where the jobs lie: In the hands of women, and specifically those of Texas women.
According to the report, Texas has seen a 93 percent increase in the number of women-owned firms since 1997, behind only Georgia and Louisiana in the overall increase in number of businesses.
And Houston has emerged as a front runner in opportunities for women entrepreneurs — one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas for women-owned firms, according to the study.
That earned the Bayou City No. 2 in a recent ranking by Forbes of "The 15 Best Cities for Female Founders," just behind New York City. The number of women-owned firms reached an all-time high of 167,300 in 2012, altogether earning $35,083,800 in revenue.
Dallas ranked No. 3 in the list, followed by Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. San Antonio took No. 15 in the ranking.
