    Elaine Turner Hits Double Digits

BLVD buzz: Designer's hot new boutique draws a big opening crowd and major expansion talk

    Clifford Pugh
    Dec 20, 2014 | 10:34 am

Elaine Turner had a lot to celebrate Wednesday night as a big crowd turned out for the opening of her new boutique in BLVD Place. "I feel so blessed to have a store when I can serve the central Houston community," Turner said referring to her first store in the Galleria area. "Everyone's going 'I live right here,' I' work right here.' That's why we opened it. I feel so supported by Houston."

It also marked the 10th store opening in Turner's rapidly expanding chain, coming on the heels of two new store openings in the Dallas area (at Southlake Town Square and The Shops at Legacy). "It's such a huge milestone, double digits," she said. "Double the stress and double the digits."

The crowd of more than 200 sipped on a special “Elaine” pink cocktail that is on the menu at Table restaurant.

And double the fun, no doubt.

The 2,000-square-foot BLVD Place store, which was completed only an hour before the party began, is Turner's most sophisticated yet. It features her signature pink sofas along with raffia wrapped walls, walnut cases tinged in gold, bamboo floors, cowhide rugs and contemporary chandeliers.

A new jewelry area near the front of the store features a vanity table and oval mirror like a home dressing table and, in the back, an apparel area resembles a closet. (The Elaine Turner apparel line, manufactured in Houston by David Peck, will be part of the expanded spring 2015 collection. Turner wore a navy gown designed by Peck to the party.)

"It really is like a home," said Heather McLeskey, executive vice president of Elaine Turner Designs.

Twenty percent of proceeds from the evening's sales were donated to Heroes for Children, a frequent charity partner of Turner's. Joining Turner as the evening's co-hosts were KHOU Channel 11 anchor Mia Gradney and C. Style fashion blogger Carly Lee. Heroes for Children co-founder Larissa Linton flew in from Dallas for the occasion.

The crowd of more than 200 sipped on a special “Elaine” pink cocktail that is on the menu at Table restaurant. The nearby BLVD Place eatery also served up hors d'oeuvres and sweets for guests as they tried on shoes, bags, jewelry and apparel. P&R Productions filmed the evening for future episodes of Elaine’s Big Life, the webisode series on YouTube.

In the crowd were Jim Turner, Valerie Eissler, Troy Clendenin, Alexandra Carreno, Shawn Conerly, Brittany Boone, Ashley Seippel, Lisa McDonald, Carrie Colbert, Jessie Ogden, April Otjen, Alissa Maples, Elisabeth Webb, Jessica Myerson, Lizbeth King, William Zietz and Laurann Claridge, Jason and Erin Busch, DeeAnn and Marcus Thigpen.

    SUSTAINABLE STYLE

Houston fashionistas embrace sustainable shopping at citywide clothing swap

Co-founders Sam Lopez, Diana Cwick, and Raquel Sandate built The Houston Clothing Swap into a thriving nonprofit from a living room idea.

In closets across Houston, people have growing piles of clothes that no longer fit, no longer match their personal style, or simply don't get worn anymore. Donating or selling the clothes on sites like Mecari or Depop sounds good until measuring and photographing each item becomes a chore that never seems to get done.

The Houston Clothing Swap is turning the tedious task of closet decluttering into a fun, community event. Participants can get rid of unwanted clothing, shoes, and accessories and take home as many new-to-them items as they like, for only a $10 admission fee — all of the clothing is free. It is a win-win that keeps fast fashion at bay and closes the loop on donating and reusing clothing while keeping perfectly good pieces out of the landfill.

The Houston Clothing Swap was co-founded by friends Sam Lopez, Raquel Sandate, and Diana Cwick. What began in 2019 as a small exchange between friends in Sandate's living room grew into swaps at local markets. Eventually, it gained enough momentum for the trio to foundConscious Consumer Collective, a non-profit that makes clothing more accessible to those who need it either for school, work, or to feel more confident in their style choices.

According to Lopez, the Houston Clothing Swap's first event had 200-300 attendees, and their second event had 400-500. They are projecting that their third official event on Sunday, April 27 will have over 1,000 eager swappers in attendance.

"We are in such a surplus of clothing, shoes, and accessories globally that nobody ever needs to buy new, never needs to go without, and never needs to consume at the expense of the Earth," said Lopez in a recentinterview with Heights magazine. "Once we start becoming conscious consumers, we can all do our part to save the world."

The event is open to the public and will have size-inclusive clothing, shoes, and accessories. However, people bringing clothes should remember a few rules. Participants can donate and take as much as they want. All donations should be brought on plastic hangers or neatly folded. Attendees should bring their own reusable bags for shopping. The Houston Clothing Swap will not accept toys, home decor, bras, underwear, or clothes that are torn, stained, or dirty. There is a $10 entry fee, and early donations and drop-offs are available for expedited entry on the day of the event.
