A nationally acclaimed ice cream shop has opened in The Heights. Houston's first location of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is now serving scoops of Darkest Chocolate, Texas Sheet Cake, and more.
The opening has taken place so quietly that Jeni's website for the Heights location doesn't note that it's open (as of Thursday, December 12), and Jeni's has yet to announce the opening on any of its social media accounts. Nevertheless, patrons could dine there.
While Jeni's has long been available at select H-E-Bs and Central Market, the scoop shop offers two dozen flavors, including holiday season specials like Boozy Eggnog, Cognac with Gingerbread, and White Chocolate Peppermint. Patrons may purchase their ice cream as one full scoop ($5.50), two half scoops ($5.50), a trio with three half scoops ($6.50), or a flight of 10 half scoops ($20). Notably, the shop does not offer sundaes, milkshakes, or other ice cream-based; it's all scoops all the time.
The store also sells pints to go, again, in a wide variety than what one would encounter in a grocery store, along with swag such as t-shirts and founder Jeni Britton Bauer's James Beard Award-winning cookbook, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home.
Only announced in September, Jeni's wasted no time in transforming the former Carter & Cooley Company Delicatessen at 375 W. 19th St. into its first Houston location. Generally, the location is clean and bright, with white subway tile floors and white walls with blue accents. The location offers a limited amount of seating, but it's easy enough to stroll 19th St. while snacking on a waffle cone.
Already available in 10 cities across the country, Jeni's is making a push into Texas. The company's first Austin location opened in November with plans for at least one more. Expect more Houston locations, too, but the company has yet to announce where they will be located.
The store is well-stocked with swag.
