    the stars at night...

2 stellar West Texas parks are among the best places to stargaze in the U.S

    Steven Devadanam
    Nov 25, 2020 | 10:45 am

With pandemic numbers expected to spike during the holidays and social distancing concerns on the rise, a trip to wide open Texas spaces may be just what the doctor ordered.

Fortunately, the Lone Star State offers no shortage of stellar stargazing spots, as evidenced by a recent guide by star map company, Under Lucky Stars. Two Texas public spaces score in the guide’s top 10 list of best national parks to enjoy celestial sights in the U.S.

To identify the ultimate stargazing destinations for visitors, Under Lucky Stars combed through each of the country’s 62 national parks and created a scoring system based on the number of visitors to the park, accessibility, and the light pollution of the park’s coordinates.

Texas’ Big Bend National Park ranks the highest, coming at No. 2, just after the Great Basin National Park in Nevada. Located in the southwest part of the state and bordering Mexico, Big Bend holds national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States, the guide notes. The park also boasts the entire Chisos mountain range.

Thanks to its vast surface area, Big Bend is heralded as one of the best stargazing parks, as it sees almost no light pollution. The park sees some 462,832 visitors annually and scores a 5 (the highest possible) for stargazing and a zero (the best) for artificial light in the ranking.

Elsewhere in the Lone Star State, the Guadalupe Mountains National Park comes in at No. 7 on the list. For the uninitiated, Guadalupe Mountains State Park is located in Salt Flat, Texas in the vast Chihuahuan Desert and is widely regarded for its bright-white Salt Basin Dunes, wildlife-rich grassland, and fossilized reef mountains.

The scenic range also protects the Permian fossil reef, the most extensive in the world. Guadalupe Mountains National Park sees a mere 188,833 annual visitors and scores and experiences very little artificial light, according to the guide. The park is beloved by hikers, even being noted by the New York Times as a “hiker’s paradise.”

For those looking to venture out to the nation’s best and brightest public spots, here are the top 10 national parks for stargazing in the U.S., according to Under Lucky Stars.

    • Great Basin (Nevada)
    •
    •  Big Bend (Texas)
    •
    • Redwood (California)
    •
    • North Cascades (Washington)
    •
    • Voyageurs (Washington)
    •
    • Lassen Volcanic (California)
    •
    •  Guadalupe Mountains (Texas)
    •
    • Great Sand Dunes (Colorado)
    •
    • Crater Lake (Oregon)
    •
    • Canyonlands (Utah)

European cruise line unveils luxury upgrade for new Galveston ship

    Eric Sandler
    Jul 18, 2025 | 1:04 pm

As a Europe-based cruise line sails closer to its Galveston debut, it has revealed another amenity to lure travelers looking for a premium experience. When the MSC Cruises’s ship the MSC Seascape begins sailing in November, it will include a luxurious upgrade option.

Called MSC Yacht Club, the ship-within-a-ship experience offers 32,000-square feet of private space within the ship. Those paying for the privilege get access to a Yacht Club-specific pool, restaurant, and the Top Sail Lounge. They get also get butler service, and an on-ship concierge to assist with booking dinner reservations, seats at entertainment venues, and on-shore excursions.

“The MSC Yacht Club was the industry’s first luxury ship-within-a-ship concept and it’s still the best,” MSC Cruises North America president Lynn Torrent said in a statement. “The white glove treatment starts the moment you get to the port, and it continues until you disembark at the end of the cruise. Our guests love the spacious suites, exclusive areas, and personal attention that makes the MSC Yacht Club so sought after. Our travel advisors tell us cruisers appreciate being able to enjoy that luxury experience alongside all the amenities we can offer on a large, resort-style ship like MSC Seascape. It’s the best of both worlds, and we’re thrilled to bring it to Galveston.”

While these sort of amenities are common on luxury cruise lines, they tend to sail smaller boats. Travelers who upgrade to Yacht Club still get all the other benefits of sailing on a ship with over 2,200 cabins. They include:

    • Robotron: An onboard, amusement park-style ride that suspends riders 175-feet above sea on a robotic arm that flips, spins, and rotates.
    • Six theater productions
    • 11 “dining venues” and 19 bars and lounges
    • Six swimming pools, including an infinity pool with ocean views
    • 7.500 square feet of space for children ages 0 to 17

Based in Geneva, Switzerland, MSC Cruises is the world’s third-largest cruise line. The privately-held company operates 23 ships worldwide.
