    More Color Please

Houston fashion entrepreneur comes up with a bright idea to add more color to your life

    Clifford Pugh
    Nov 15, 2017 | 4:38 pm

What: Carrie Colbert "More Color Please" launch party and book release.

    Where: FM Kitchen & Bar.

The scoop: More than 200 fashion bloggers, designers, fans, and friends filled the patio of the popular restaurant near Washington Avenue on a sunny, picture-perfect day to celebrate the launch of Carrie Colbert's new coffee table book, More Color, Please: The Walls of Houston, and the launch ofCarrieColbert.com, a new website that urges women "to live, think and dress with more color."

"Color is an attitude and a mindset," Colbert told CultureMap. "I've got a great team ready to produce colorful content every day. Whether it's fashion, food, city guide, or travel, inspirational well-being articles, the more colorful the better. That's what our brand is about."

Colbert, a former engineer with a keen interest in fashion who found success with the Wear + Where + Well fashion and lifestyle blog, has been working on the new endeavor for most of this year, while taking time out to give birth to a daughter, now five months old.

"Fashion is actually having a colorful moment," Colbert said, pointing to her rainbow-colored skirt and off-the-shoulder magenta sweater. "Maybe it's a push towards positivity and happiness that the world needs right now. We do believe in the power of colors to influence our mood and attitude. It's fun to see that movement spreading."

Guests, many with young children scampering about, posed for photographs in front of a mural painted by Houston artist Sebastien "Mr. D" Boileau that matched the cover of Colbert's book, which features the colorful walls of Houston alongside inspirational quotes. Boileau also created works of art on the spot, while illustrator Rongrong DeVoe, whose work has been featured in Vogue, InStyle, and BuzzFeed, drew fashion illustrations of guests.

The book, which retails for $80 with 10 percent of proceeds donated to Harvey relief efforts, is available on the new website, along with branded "More Color Please" T-shirts, infant onesies, and exclusive products from Houston designers, including Colores Collective earrings and Willows Crown hair accessories.

Guests noshed on chips, salsa, guacamole, queso, and campechana, along with sparkling rosé provided by FM Kitchen & Bar's chef Ryan Hildebrand, who also created a specialty "More Color Please" milkshake throughout the lunchtime event.

Colorful balloons lined the entrance to the patio, and guests left with flower arrangements as a gift from Colbert and "More Color Please"-branded macarons from Macaron by Patisse.

Who: Seen in the crowd were the new site's COO Julie Weinstein, Donae Chramosta, Tracy and Harry Faulkner, Caroline Harper Knapp, Ashley Rose, Jenny Weber, Lauren Mills, Traci Ling, Sukaina Rajani, David Peck, Hunter Bell, Issa Chou, Valerie Dittner, Chuck Randall, Joe Baden, Katherine Le, Jack Brasington, Mike Chabala, Beth DeLozier, Esther Freedman, Sage Coralli, Chloe Dao, Estela Cockrell, and Madison Payne.

6 Houston fashion experts on what to wear to Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour

Beyoncé’s tour wardrobe features custom cowboy couture from fashion houses like Burberry, Mugler, and McQueen.

She may have debuted her Cowboy Carter era at the 2024 Grammy Awards, but Beyoncé left the real rodeo for Houston. The hometown queen is saddling up for a two-night takeover, and the Beyhive is showing up with Texas-sized glam.

In true H-Town fashion, fans aren't just going for the music; they are dressing the part and embracing Beyoncé's country renaissance with denim, rhinestones, fringe, and boots made for strutting.

To help fans with their style game, we've asked several of Houston's most fashionable ladies for their concert-night must-haves. From bold accessories and statement tops to perfectly layered looks, these pieces channel the spirit of Cowboy Carter with a bit of Bayou City flair.

After all, this isn't just any concert — this is a Texas-sized homecoming fit for a queen.

    Luisa Babarczy, Co-Owner,South to North

Luisa Babarczy and Alejandra Bravo's Autry Park store South to North showcases the best Latin American fashion designers to Houston's rapt audiences. For time in the Beyhive, Babarczy recommends a jacket for layering.

"My recommendation would definitely be the Torera Clásica Denim jacket by Monserrat Messeguer. This jacket is bold and glamorous, with just the right amount of sparkle. The classic denim gives it that effortless, 'cool girl' vibe, while the rhinestone fringe brings full-on Sasha Fierce energy. Pair it with high-waisted pants and a statement boot."

    Lizzy Bentley, Founder,City Boots

A night at Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter concert wouldn't be complete without the perfect pair of boots. Available at The Avenue, Houstonians can snag a pair from City Boots.

"The Amarillo Boot is sophisticated enough for a night out while maintaining the authentic Western spirit that never goes out of style. They were designed with an extra inch of height to give that perfect blend of comfort and style that takes you from concert to after-party effortlessly."

Clara Hough, Co-Founder, Shop Off The Record

Clara Hough and her Shop Off The Record co-founder, Sania Ahmed-Irfan, spend their days sourcing hard-to-find luxury products for Houston's knowledgeable trendsetters. Hough suggests a luxe bag to finish any outfit while keeping with NRG's strict bag policies.

"I would choose one of these two Bottega Veneta Bags for the Cowboy Carter concert. The Concert Pouch, available at Tootsies, or the Mini Loop Camera Bag, available at Neiman Marcus Galleria, are the perfect size, meet most venue guidelines, and have a crossbody strap that is a must for dancing and moving through crowds. Bottega Veneta has incredible craftsmanship and can endure a lot of use while remaining in excellent shape."

    Christy Lynn Lee, Owner,Christy Lynn

Houston-based designer Christy Lynn Lee is known for hand-painted florals and delicate silk, but when it comes to attending a high-energy concert, she goes for layering and flair.

"I love Courtney Pell Wilkerson's style and the curated selection at her boutique,Pell 1990. Her selections always strike a perfect balance of classic, feminine, and cool. I like pairing some of her shoes and accessories with layering garments to pair with my pieces. TheNayelle Cream Bodysuit is great as a layering piece under one of our novelty jackets."

Christina Greene McAllen, Owner,Christina Greene Jewelry

The Houston jewelry designer who famously dresses the crowds in turquoise and gold during rodeo season shares her local favorite for a classic must-have.

"I love the white fringe top by Mason's Daughter available atThe Avenue. There's nothing more classic than a white button-up. Now, add some fringe, and I'm all in."

    Paulina Padilla,Stylist

This Houston-based stylist is behind some of the city's most iconic looks, styling everything from high-profile photoshoots to curating the perfect closet. For concert season, she says it's all about the right accessories that take an outfit from cute to Cowboy Carter-worthy.

"A cowboy hat for the Cowboy Carter Tour is a must. TheFreya Haven Hat can elevate the simplest outfit or even complete the maximal outfit for a Western chic concert look. The beige is my favorite."
