Bizarre Bike Attack
Get off my road! Cycling club attacked by a pickup truck driving, baseball bat wielding senior citizen
A bizarre and violent road confrontation in Conroe has left one cyclist injured and a 74-year-old driver facing serious criminal charges.
The Woodlands Cycling Club was out for a ride along Lake Forest Drive on Oct. 17 when Sherman Clark pulled up behind the group in his pickup. As he passed the bike riders on the left, Clark rolled down his window and began yelling.
“He told us to stay off his road and to get out of his neighborhood,” WCC member Steve Schoger tells Woodlands-area newspaper The Villager.
“He told us to stay off his road and to get out of his neighborhood."
Clark swerved in front of the group, running one rider off the road. When he slammed on the breaks, another cyclist crashed into the back of the truck, breaking a wrist and dislocating a shoulder. Clark pulled to the side of the street, stepping from the pickup with a metal baseball bat.
One fast-thinking bike rider started recording the whole incident on a cellphone.
"You're riding all over the goddamn road," Clark shouts in the short video, which was posted on the Montgomery County Police Reporter crime blog. When the 74-year-old is asked why he's carrying the bat, Clark announces that he's protecting himself from the cycling club. He then drives from the scene, crushing a $5,000 bike in the process.
County authorities arrested Clark an hour later on charges of criminal mischief and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He faces up to $20,000 in fines if convicted.
