Celebrating a big 20th

President George W. Bush and six top toques headline Baker Institute 20th anniversary celebration

Shelby Hodge
Sep 27, 2013 | 12:48 pm

The sleek invitations hit mailboxes earlier this week as the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy gears up for a spectacular 20th anniversary celebration with former President George W. Bush as the headliner and with a remarkable collection of six of the city's leading chefs preparing the dinner.

Plans have been in the making for more than a year for the Nov. 8 gala that will take place in an elaborately-decorated party tent on the Rice University Campus where Baker Institute founding director Edward Djerejian will lead "A Presidential Conversation" with Bush. Former Secretary of State James A. Baker III and Rice president David Leebron will be on the program as well.

The evening will celebrate the institute's international stature that includes rankings as the 13th best university-based think tank in the world and sixth among energy research programs worldwide. Nationally, the Baker Institute ranks 21st among the U.S.'s prestigious think tanks.

Complimenting the cerebral component, the gala promises a first-of-its-kind culinary celebration as well. Each of the chefs participating are James Beard Award-nominated talents. Sharing their expertise will be Reef's Bryan Caswell, Hugo's Hugo Ortega, Sparrow Bar + Cookshop's Monica Pope, Underbelly's Chris Shepherd, Uchi's Philip Speer and Michael Cordúa of Americas, Churrascos and Artista fame.

Joining forces as chairs of the gala evening are Cynthia and Bucky Allshouse, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor and Sheridan and John Eddie Williams. Add to that powerful mix Shahla and Hushang Ansary, who serve as anniversary celebration chairs. It will be a special evening for the Ansarys as Hushang will receive the James A. Baker III Prize for Excellence in Leadership 2013. Details on attending the gala are available here.

The gala is the first of two celebrations, the second of which the following night is geared for young professionals and among the co-chairs is Bush's daughter Jennifer Bush Hager and her husband Henry Hager. Check back at CultureMap for details on that party, dubbed "Club Berlin: A Night in Awash in Digital Grafitti."

Paramore rocks Houston next year.

Houston fans of alterna-emo-pop group Paramore and their radio-ready hooks can catch the trio next year during a just-announced stadium tour.

The act famous for anthemic singles such as "Ain't It Fun," "Misery Business," and "Still Into You" will hit Toyota Center on July 11, 2023, with Foals and The Linda Lindas as openers.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 am Friday, November 11 at ToyotaCenter.com. To protect tickets from mass-purchasing scalpers, the tour is partnering with Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan platform on two presales; those interested can register for both presales here now through Monday, November 7 at 10:59 pm.

In addition to Houston, Paramore will play Dickies Fort Worth's Dickies Arena on July 8 and Austin's Moody Center the next day on July 9.

Paramore is touring in support of their sixth studio album, This Is Why, which is slated for a February 10, 2023 release. The band recently performed the title track on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and also recently performed at Austin City Limits.

Formed in 2004 in Franklin, Tennessee, Paramore has seen myriad lineup changes, but has been consistently led by charismatic lead singer Hayley Williams, known for her hair of varied hues and springy stage presence. The band boasts more than 17 million followers on Spotify with more than 500 million streams on songs "Still Into You" and "Misery Business."

Active in socio-political issues, Paramore is donating portion of ticket sales to Support + Feed, which supports plant-based food initiatives and food equality and REVERB, an environmental nonprofit. REVERB will also host an "eco-village" at each tour stop to raise awareness for social and environmental causes.

Beloved Houston Astros announcer shares deeply personal family bond with Philadelphia

Young Todd Kalas and Harry Kalas

A young (and well-dressed) Young Todd Kalas and his dad Harry Kalas.

Veteran broadcaster Todd Kalas is well-known by Houston Astros fans. As the television play-by-play announcer for the team, his voice is the soundtrack to summer for a lot of Houstonians, which is something that's in his blood.

Todd's dad was Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas, who spent the first seasons of his career in Houston before becoming a Philadelphia icon.

Todd says the Astros playing the Phillies in the World Series has been an ideal scenario.

"After the first game here in Philadelphia, I got to see people I hadn't seen in 10 or 20 years," said Kalas, who was born in Houston. "It's been a great homecoming."

Harry Kalas and a 4-year-old Todd moved from Houston to Philadelphia in 1971, which is where his legacy as a Hall of Fame broadcaster was cemented.

"It's really one of the great bonds of any broadcaster and city I've ever seen," said Todd. "Dad, and the city, and the team were just all one."

Houston cozies up as a top winter travel destination for warm-weather lovers

Memorial Park's Eastern Glades makes for a fun trip.

For Texans, winter in the Lone Star State brings a long-awaited respite from six months of unbearable heat. We're pretty content to finally leave the house without a double (or triple) layer of SPF. But for tourists, winter in Texas brings respite from the opposite problem: colder climates where locals actually experience things like rain and snow. A recent WalletHub study shows Texas taking three of the top 10 "best winter vacation destinations for warm-weather lovers," with Houston landing at No. 7.

Specifically, Houston scores top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 1) and most attractions (No. 9).

Comparing around 70 of the largest U.S. metro areas, the study groups cities by warm and cold weather. Rather than a subjective survey of each locale's scenic beauty (in which Texas cities would also sweep the top 10, of course), WalletHub focused on the cost and convenience of traveling to each city, as well as the number of attractions and variety of activities in each destination.

As a result, the two lists rank "the cheapest U.S. destinations that are also the easiest to reach," according to the study's landing page. To compile the data, WalletHub measured 37 key metrics, including two weeks of flight data, safety indicators, and weather predictions.

In the warm weather category, Nevada's Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise metro area nabbed the No. 1 spot with an overall score of 67.18 and high marks in the number-of-attractions category (No. 2) and number of warm-weather activities (No. 1).

In total, Texas took nine of the 37 spots in the warm weather category, with three cities in the top 5. Here's how other Texas metros fared on the list:

  • Austin — No. 2. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 2) and best weather (No. 6).
  • Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington —No. 4. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 3) and best weather (No. 2).
  • San Antonio-New Braunfels — No. 5. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 6) and lowest local costs (No. 3).
  • Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land — No. 7. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 1) and number of attractions (No. 9).
  • Killeen-Temple — No. 21. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 6).
  • McAllen-Edinburg-Mission— No. 27. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 1).
  • Corpus Christi— No. 32. Top marks for lowest travel costs (No. 7).
  • Brownsville-Harlingen — No. 33.
  • Beaumont-Port Arthur— No. 35.
