Each year, the Houston Food Bank finds supportive sponsors in Whole Foods Market, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and the arts community for an important annual event — Empty Bowls Houston.

A unique lunch fundraiser, the minimum $25 donation includes a simple meal of soup and bread provided by Whole Foods and the pleasure of picking out a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted bowls out of hundreds donated by local ceramicists and woodworkers.

The empty bowls carry a symbolic meaning and a practical purpose: For each dollar spent, the Houston Food Bank is able to provide three meals for hungry Houstonians.

In this week's CultureMap Moment, staff writer Tyler Rudick took the KHOU Ch. 11 News crew along to the Houston City Hall Farmer's Market to learn more about the ninth annual initiative, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
