The road to riches paved with street smARTS at creative Glassell School of Art bash

    Shelby Hodge
    May 6, 2013 | 11:28 am

The Glassell School of Art annual benefit and auction typically takes a distant turn from the buttoned-down persona of its parent, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Friday night's bash took an even further trek down the road to unconventional creativity with its "Street SmART" theme. Think street entertainers, muralists at work, video travel and road signs galore.

Chairs Leslie and Brad Bucher and Jereann Chaney headlined the casual gathering that began in the sculpture garden with cocktails and beer (this had to be the first time that cans of Bud Light were served at an MFAH event). Entertainment was provided by mimes and acrobats and muralists painting on large canvasses.

The second stop on this road to riches for the Glassell School was inside the building where area artists contributed 76 pieces, 62 of which sold for a total of $86,415. Add that to $208,000 in ticket and table sales. Final destination was the party tent, erected in the parking lot, decorated with shiny road signs in place of table numbers (Kirby Drive, Memorial Drive and the like) and scores of traffic signs suspended overhead.

DJ Sun spun the dance tunes while a GoPro video of a drive through Houston streets played out as a truly moving backdrop to the dinner setting.

Among the 200 guests sitting down for the City Kitchen dinner were Alfred C. Glassell III, Laura Bellows, Kathy and John Orton, Victoria and Marshal Lightman, Nancy and Erik Littlejohn, Karen Bradshaw, Susan and David Fine, John Guess Jr., Cabrina and Steven Owsley, Kelli and Eddy Blanton, Kim and Dan Moody and Wade Wilson.

What: Houston Symphony Young Associates Council Tasting Notes: A Wine and Spirits Pairing Dinner

    Where: Andiron

The scoop: Members of the Houston Symphony's Young Associates Council and friends raised a glass — or several, but who’s counting for a good cause. The exclusive and charming evening drew eager oenophiles and symphony fans who enjoyed a thoughtfully curated experience for the taste buds and the soul.

The evening opened with a lively cocktail hour, where the chic A-listers mingled over hand-crafted potions. Chef Michael O'Connor's Andiron team prepared a multi-course tasting menu, with each dish paired with a selection of wines and spirits that elevated the flavors. Adding a touch of melodious elegance, Houston Symphony musicians Boson Mo on violin and Sheldon Person on viola performed a set featuring Spanish and French arrangements. Europe without a plane ride? We’re in.

With Aprill Nelson, Carrie Brandsberg-Dahl, and Kirby Lodholz at the helm, the proceeds contributed to the Houston Symphony’s Wine Dinner and Auction, directly supporting the symphony’s Education and Community Engagement programs.

Who: Javita Alexander, Kimberly and James Bell, Sverre Brandsberg-Dahl, Lindsay Buchanan and Brian Fisher, Elizabeth Condie, Ray Dennison, Logan and Charles Dresser, Sarah and Reza Ebrahimi, Gonzalo Farias, Laurel Flores and Matt Weathers, Blaine Fulmer, Amy Goodpasture, Roya Gordon, Mario Gudmundsson, China Howard, Jonathan Jan, Paul Kirchkoff, Jeremy Kreutz, David Lodholz, Maxine Olefsky and Justin Kenney, Sagar Patel, Lauren Price and Gator Adams, Nikki Reddy, Anthony Sanchez Rodriguez Lee, Liana and Andrew Schwaitzberg, Crystal and Hussein Shel, Melanie Smith, Jen Torres, Stephanie Weber and Paul Muri.
