Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner. And if you're like us, you've waiting until the last moment to figure out where to celebrate. From tequila to tacos, below are suggestions for five fiestas — with drink and food specials — to hit up on Tuesday (May 5).
The Pastry War
The laid-back vibe and festive Mexican décor, including a skull-centric ceiling mural, at downtown mezcaleria, The Pastry War, make it the perfect spot to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Especially with drink specials such as $5 premium frozen margaritas and half price mezcales (and other select agave spirits). Break out your first digit and enter a thumb-wrestling tournament for a shot at a $200 gift certificate to Hugo’s. Bonus: the party kicks off at 4 p.m., which is also the start of happy hour (4-6:30 p.m.) and deals on house margaritas (frozen or on the rocks; $5) and Mexican beers ($3).
Doc's Bar and Grill
You can’t go wrong with the all-day discounts at Austin-import Doc’s Bar and Grill on May 5. You’ll not only save on regular Tuesday specials, including Texas beers ($3), Dos Equis ($3) and Titos-centric drinks ($5), but also on a holiday-only deal: a platter of 10 tacos (with queso, chips and salsa) and a bucket of five beers (filled with your choice of mix-and-match Corona, Corona Light and Modelo), all for just $20.
El Patio
The party also goes all day at El Patio on Westheimer. Join the festivities at the Briargrove-area Mexican joint, which include a mariachi band (from 5-10 p.m.) and savings on Corona, Corona Light and Pacifico beers ($2 each; $11 per bucket), Dos Equis ($2.50), frozen margaritas ($6) and the likes. If you let your hair down and partake in a signature potent blue margarita ($6.50), we won't tell.
El Big Bad
Head downtown to gastro-cantina El Big Bad for a boozy dinner (6 p.m.) hosted by tequila experts from El Jimador Tequila. Enjoy a fresh juice and tequila cocktail, tequila flight and build your own street taco bar for just $20 per person. Tickets must be purchased in advance here.
Cuchara
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo (5-10 p.m.) at Tastemaker Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year nominee, Cuchara, and get your fill of $2 tacos (filled with pork rinds, refried beans, grilled cactus, spicy shredded chicken or potatoes and chorizo), $13 specialty margaritas (8-oz of your choice of jicama, cucumber-serrano pepper, watermelon, mango or cantaloupe flavors) and more.
