    Monique Offers More

Monique Lhuillier joins the fashion revolution with direct-from-the-runway offerings

    Clifford Pugh
    Feb 16, 2016 | 8:58 am

Way back in 1996, Monique Lhuillier launched her career as a bridal designer. Now she offers so much more — and some of her latest looks are available directly from the runway.

Her fall womenswear collection, unveiled at the Skylight at Moynihan Station venue during New York Fashion Week, features the voluminous special occasion ball gowns that she has become known for. But it also showcases a sizable number of day wear pieces, including jacquard skirts and slacks, art-deco cardigans, alpaca knit sweaters with floral petal embroidery, and lace dresses, that can take the busy woman from day to nighttime without changing outfits.

Lhuillier also debuted her first "sunwear" collection of sunglasses, day bags, belts and printed scarves. Add in the footwear and evening bag collection she launched last February and the designer can now dress a woman from head-to-toe.

"What I love about this venue is showing the breadth of the Monique Lhuillier woman," Lhuillier said backstage after her show. "She doesn't only go on the red carpet or get married, she has a full life where she goes to all these places and she needs special items to wear, and not necessarily a dress or a gown."

Unlike many designers who show a lot of dark shades for fall, Lhuillier's collection features eye-popping colors of cherry red, teal blue, rose pink, and basil green. She said she was inspired by '60s actress and style icon, Talitha Getty. But Lhuillier's home base of Los Angeles always figures in her sunnier and a bit flashier look — one that goes over well in Texas, too.

"I love color and I like special items and the combinations are really interesting," Lhuillier said. "It's about being ultra-luxe and standing out and making your personality shine to feel special."

Like a lot of designers, Lhuillier is trying to figure out the best way to satisfy social media-conscious consumers who see looks from fashion week and want them immediately instead of waiting five or six months until the styles are in stores. For the first time, she picked five looks from the show that can be ordered immediately on her website and delivered within weeks, ranging from a red lace blouse ($1,495) to a crystal embroidered midi dress ($5,995).

"Since we manufacture designs in our own factories, we decided to test it out this season and see if it really is the wave of the future," she said.

    SOUTHERN CHARM

Reese Witherspoon's fashion brand celebrates 10 years at Houston pop-up

Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James brings its signature Southern charm to Houston’s Hotel Granduca October 16 - 19.

"Whoever said orange is the new pink was seriously disturbed," Elle Woods (as played by Reese Witherspoon) declared in the classic hit Legally Blonde. No one will be disturbed, however, by the fashion icon's "The Decade Tour" stopping in Houston.

Draper James, Witherspoon's beloved lifestyle brand, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a 10-city Southern tour, and Houston is one of only two Texas stops. The tour kicked off in Charleston earlier this year and will arrive at the Hotel Granduca for a four-day event from Thursday, October 16 through Sunday, October 19.

Attendees can expect plenty of Southern charm and Draper James' signature blue colorway. Along with sipping on Witherspoon's famous sweet tea, customers will have the opportunity to shop at the brand's curated pop-up and preview the latest Draper James collections. Each day will feature a new bespoke experience. On Thursday, shoppers can enjoy pajama embroidery by Stitch & Press Embroidery. Friday features personalized Decade Tour candles and totes by The Brilliant Brush. On Saturday, Spark Jewelry Co will sell its custom jewelry.

"A decade ago, Reese Witherspoon founded Draper James to share the beauty, charm, and warmth of her Southern heritage," said Jeannie Yoo, CEO of Draper James. "This brand exists to celebrate women — their strength, individuality, and grace. As we mark this milestone anniversary, our tour is a heartfelt way to connect with our community and personally thank our loyal customers for 10 incredible years of support."

Named for Witherspoon's grandparents, Dorthea Draper and William James Witherspoon, Draper James is a tribute to her Southern upbringing. Since its launch in 2015, the brand has been known for its cheerful prints, feminine silhouettes, and celebration of Southern traditions. In addition to clothing, the brand features ready-to-wear, accessories, home decor, and pet items.

Houston got its own taste of Draper James when the brand opened in The Galleria in November 2021. The store has since closed, but fans of Draper James can still shop online or find the brand's pet supplies and eyewear at various locations around the city.

Free tickets and more information about The Decade Tour is available here.
