Sugar Land Steps Up

Celebrity chefs and Master Somms help Sugar Land food festival step up

Eric Sandler
Jan 20, 2017 | 10:30 am

The Sugar Land Wine & Food Affair is taking a big step forward in 2017. Now operated by IWSC, the UK-based company that organizes the acclaimed Atlanta Food & Wine Festival and the traveling pork festival Cochon555, the Sugar Land festival has attracted a lineup of celebrity chefs designed to draw attendees from across the Houston area to a series of events being held April 6 through 9.

The four-day bash kicks off with two dinners on Thursday April 6. The first, dubbed The Boiling Point, features Houston's own Bryan Caswell (Reef, El Real, etc) with David Bancroft (Acre Restaurant in Auburn, AL) and Top Chef: Texas veteran Edward Lee who will join forces to put their own spin on a classic Southern seafood boil, including Caswell's signature Texas BBQ crabs. Fluff Bake Bar chef-owner Rebecca Masson will provide desserts. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Caswell's Southern Salt Foundation.

Thursday night's other dinner, The Italian Invasion: Italy and the Rest of the World, should appeal to wine lovers. Hosted by Master Sommeliers Craig Collins and Drew Hendricks, each course will feature one Italian wine and one wine from somewhere else in the world, but diners won't know which is which. Attendees will vote for their favorites. With chef Andrew Curren of Austin's acclaimed Italic restaurant preparing the food, it should be a thoroughly memorable experience.

Fridays festivities kick off with a lunch at the soon-to-open Bacon Bros. Public House that explores preservation techniques like fermentation and curing, as prepared by chefs Kevin Ouzts (GA) and host chef Joseph Zerwas. Friday night's Grand Tasting at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square has a wine focus (everything from Bourdeaux to bubbles) and will feature bites from an eclectic mix of chefs including Richard Knight (Hunky Dory), Antoine Ware (Harold's in the Heights), and Shanna and Brian O’Hea (Academe at Kennebunk Inn, Maine).

The popular Sip & Stroll has been expanded to both Saturday and Sunday. In addition to food prepared by local restaurants like Marini’s Empanada House and Café Piquet, attendees can enjoy wine, cocktails, and a beer garden.

Tickets for all the events are on sale now. Prices for individual events range from $65 for the Sip & Stroll to $200 for The Italian Invasion. Weekend packages that include access to classes on various culinary culinary topic and attendance at both the Grand Tasting and the Sip & Stroll are priced at $150 and $325. Hotel packages are also available.

Three Brothers Bakery is now has opened Tanglewood.

Good news for fans of hamantaschen and rye bread who live just west of the Galleria area. Three Brothers Bakery has quietly opened its new location in the Walgreens-anchored center at 574 Chimney Rock Rd.

Located in a former Murphy's Deli, the new Three Brothers occupies a 1,300-square-foot space. The bakery, a staple of Houston's Jewish community, serves breads, cakes, cookies, pies and other items. It will also offer a full range of coffee drinks.

Bobby Jucker traces his roots in the baking business back five generations to Chrzanow, Poland circa 1825, according to the bakery. His father Sigmund immigrated to America with his brothers Sol and Max after all three survived the Holocaust.

Tanglewood is the bakery's first new location since opening an outpost on Washington Avenue in 2014. More recently, the bakery's main location on Braeswood suffered damage during the Tax Day flood in 2016 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. In 2018, Three Brothers received the SBA Phoenix Award for Small Business Disaster Recovery in recognition of the resilience Jucker and his wife demonstrated in the face of so many challenges.

"The response from the Tanglewood community has been so incredibly welcoming," Jucker added. "We’re thrilled to be in this neighborhood and look forward to becoming a part of the fabric of Tanglewood.”

Mattress Mack explains f-bomb-laden exchange with Philadelphia fan

Mattress Mack didn't back down from Philly fan.

Chances are, a large part of the Greater Houston area was uttering a colorful metaphor or two after the Houston Astros Game 3 World Series 7-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, November 1.

But before the game, one of Houston’s most celebrated citizens dropped a profanity-laden bomb against a group of Philly fans. Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvaleresponded with a series of f-bombs to hecklers and trash talkers who were out to prove that Philadelphia’s “City of Brotherly Love” is clearly just clever branding.

“The guy was screaming ‘f*ck the Astros, take the jerseys off and show us the buzzers,’” the cherished Gallery Furniture owner tells CultureMap via phone from Philadelphia, sounding much more relaxed. “Then it was, ‘José Altuve will never make the Hall of Fame — he’s the biggest f*cking cheater ever. I had enough of him.’”

This is unbelievable. @MattressMack is the nicest dude ever. BUT he has like 15 million on the line and he’s in Philly. I don’t wanna say this was inevitable but it was inevitable. Fair play on both sides. pic.twitter.com/tL6wuvjJ9E
— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) November 2, 2022

Philly fan got an earful and the internet got a near-viral video. While some fans have responded with shock at the local businessman and benefactor’s retort, many are rallying — even offering to provide free security for the slender "Save You Money" superfan.

Never one to back down (clearly), McIngvale has a cool $10 million riding on an Astros World Series win; some speculated that he was nervous about losing. Mack shrugs that off and is confident the team will bounce back. “We’ll be fine,” he reassures. A win could net him $75 million or more. (Yeah, he’ll be fine.)

Now that he and the city can laugh about it all (the exchange, not the loss), we pitched the pitchman a marketing idea: how about a “Mack cussing tip jar”-type promotion, with proceeds going to charity?

“Hey, that’s certainly a great idea,” he responds. “Let me get back to Houston and I’ll get back to you.”

Here’s hoping Mack and the rest of us won’t be swearing when the ‘Stros take on the Phillies in Game 4 on Wednesday, November 2.

Magnificent Memorial-area mansion shatters record as most expensive home sold in Houston

Magnificent Memorial-area mansion shatters record as most expensive home sold in Houston

Behold the most expensive house in Houston.

Houston is no stranger to multi-million dollar home sales. Driving through River Oaks, Hunter's Creek, or West U means passing home after home with seven-figure price tags.

But, 120 Carnarvon Dr. is special. Tucked into the beautifully wooded acres behind the tony Houstonian Club and Spa, the home dubbed The Manor on Carnarvon recently sold for more than $20 million, setting a record for the most-expensive single-family home sale in MLS in Houston history.

Sworn to secrecy, representatives from listing firm Douglas Elliman Realty couldn't disclose the actual sale price to CultureMap. Suffice it to say, as it was once listed for $29.5 million in 2020, 120 Carnarvon Dr. is now the first single-family home to sell for more than $20 million in MLS in Houston history.

As they say, everything's bigger in Texas, including our home sales.

As for the estate: The manse sprawls across more than 27, 000 square feet and takes its inspiration from great European estates. The immaculate gardens are artfully designed, with fountains and statuary set among the perfectly manicured hedgerows, essentially, a Versailles in miniature.

The main house unfolds around a courtyard, seen from the French doors and pane windows that accent the home and enhance its palatial setting.

Inside offers six bedrooms; seven full and nine half-bathrooms. Multiple kitchens offer the opportunity for everything from an elaborate meal, a catered affair, or an intimate dinner.

Entertainment amenities abound. There's a wellness spa and gym, several terraces, and a separate, 3,700-square-foot, two-bedroom guest house. Outside finds an outdoor kitchen, playground, and sports court.

Stone walls, iron fences, and electric gates around the property provide privacy and the feel of being away from it all, while in the middle of one of the most prestigious ZIP codes in Texas.
