Ditch the dribble: Non-athletic pursuits for the still sports-minded
This weekend is rife with non-athletic pursuits for the still sports-minded. We're talking more than reps in the garden at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and sprints down the Menil Collection's corridors. There's some serious art to be had in Houston — here's a little step-by-step.
Step 1: A 1 p.m. gallery talk at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Visualizing the Competition. The competition comes off the court and into the city's largest art museum's galleries. From competitions between mortals and deities and bitter disputes between artists, this 45-minute discussion will shed light on the art world's nemesis culture. Your docent art coach will also dip into the special exhibition, Antiquity Revived: Neoclassical Art in the Eighteenth Century. Co-organized by the Musée du Louvre, Paris, the show culls images of warriors, ancient emperors and garden variety jerks into an exhibition that is sure to enrich this special tour. 1001 Bissonnet St.
Step 2: Park it at the Art Car Museum, where NASCAR dads and fine art lovers alike will find a hidden vehicular treasure. Sure to get your blood pumping is the current exhibition, Mark David Bradford a.k.a. "Scrapdaddy." A beloved art car artist, Bradford some built some of the most elaborate (and frightening) motor sculptures — think monumental robotic hydraulics and maniacal metal monsters. Bradford's creatures have toured the highways of Europe and South America, but nothing compares to seeing them in their natural habitat. 140 Heights Blvd.
Step 3: While you're downtown for Bracket Town, why not take yourself on a little tour of the downtown public artworks? You'll find masterworks by such local heavyweights as David Adickes and Paul Hester, along with international MVPs the likes of Jim Love, Joan Miró and Claes Oldenburg.
