Mascot On a Mission
Pedobear wears JoPa cleats, stops Penn State from trying to obscure its childabuse shame
Between allegations of child sexual abuse committed by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and the high-profile firing of longtime head coach Joe Paterno (who many feel didn't do close to enough when told about Sandusky assaulting a young boy in the football building), the Penn State football program is struggling. To say the least.
And some college sports fans are determined to make sure that this is one horrific scandal that does not get forgotten.
When the University of Houston beat the Nittany Lions 30-14 at the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas Monday, the scandal was brought back to the forefront in an unusual way. One fan showed up to the game dressed as Pedobear, the Internet meme meant to mock pedophiles.
According to the sports website DeadSpin, the furry mascot wore "JoePa cleats" and carried a sign that read "Keep Quiet and Don't Tell Anyone."
Penn State fans' pro-JoePa placards had nothing on Pedobear, who tailgated before the game, made rounds in the stadium to take pictures with fans and was even featured on the JumboTron.
The furry mascot wore "JoePa cleats" and carried a sign that read "Keep Quiet and Don't Tell Anyone."
The idea apparently came together on a University of Texas fan page, ShaggyBevo.com, where a user named 'Ghost of LL' declaimed a still-lingering disgust about Sandusky's behavior and Paterno not doing enough to stop it.
"Yes, let's all reflect on shame, shall we," wrote Ghost of LL. "Let's let Pedobear provoke people into considering that for which we should be ashamed."
Did this message come through in the mascot's appearance? Or did Pedobear make light of the very serious issue of pedophilia?
