Food awards are the Recipe for Success in campaign for healthier eating
The serious effort at combating childhood obesity took on a glamorous note at River Oaks Country Club when Recipe for Success held its annual Blue Plate Special Cafe awards luncheon. As 300 influential Houstonians poured into the ballroom, it was quickly apparent that Recipe for Success founder Gracie Cavnar had gotten the attention of individuals who make a difference in H-Town.
Cavnar and husband Bob Cavnar welcomed community leaders including Ginni Mithoff, Bobbie Nau, Karen and Roland Garcia, Cyndy Garza Roberts and City Councilman Steven Costello.
KHOU Channel 11's Deborah Duncan added a light touch to the serious effort with her clever humor. In a different tone, Costello addressed the roots of childhood obesity when presenting the Champions of Food Justice Award to Glen and Honi Boudreaux of Jolie Vue Farms, the couple recognized for their efforts at educating the populace on the importance of consuming locally grown foods.
Revival Market's Ryan Pera received the Blue Plate Special Chef of the Year Award. Golden Whisk Award honors went to Brooke Candelaria and Suzanne Williams as Volunteers of the Year and Olga Abundis as Teacher of the Year.
Among guests stocking up on goodies from the 18 local artisan vendors proffering their edible wares at the luncheon's Harvest Market were Beth Wolf, Holly A.N. Smith, Lance Gilliam, Randa Weiner, Cathy Brock, Laurie Morian, Debra Grierson, Ceron, Sharon Owens, Milton Townsend and Karina Barbieri.
