Habitat for Humanity came knocking and artists & patrons answered at home-themedgala
It was a brilliant idea — tap 25 artists to create decorative doors for auction at Houston Habitat for Humanity's "There's No Place Like Home" gala. The result was a ballroom at Hilton Americas-Houston filled with good-hearted individuals and a line-up of playful doors.
The evening, celebrating Houston Habitat for Humanity's 25 years of providing homes for the poor, was chaired by Dr. Kelli Cohen Fein and Martin Fein, Leela and Nat Krishnamurthy, Anita and Gerald Smith and Trini Mendenhall-Sosa and Frank Sosa.
Three individuals and four companies were honored with awards. Carl Umland was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Irene and Brian Binash with the Builder's Award. Chevron, InnerChange Ministries, Wells Fargo and The Kinkaid School were also honored.
Among the artists contributing doors to the auction were Linda Limb, Jackie Gendel, Spencer Anderson, Kermit Eisenhutand Judy Maynard. Gaynell Drexler chaired the doors project that was co-chaired by Philamena Baird. Their combined efforts with that of the chairs saw close to $1 million raised for the non-profit.
In the crowd were Margaret Alkek Williams and Jim Daniels, Joni Baird, Ileana and Michael Trevino, Tara and David Wuthrich, Merele Yarborough, Habitat board chair David Keane, Habitat board gala chair Toni Jackson and Habitat executive director Algenita-Scott Davis.
