Think everything Texas at this swinging benefit to save the San JacintoBattleground
Boots, bolos, Texas-sized baubles and similar rodeo finery defined the costuming chosen by those two-stepping into the River Oaks Country Club ballroom for the "Party for Texas," hosted by the San Jacindo Battleground Association with proceeds going for preservation of the park.
It was the grand finale celebration of the 175th anniversary of Texas independence, which was, of course, won at the Battle of San Jacinto.
And it was all about Texana from the auction items of Lone Star gifts and trips, to a best of Texas menu to the Texas swing sounds of Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel. The country club ballroom and foyer were decorated to the hilt Texas style. Think yellow roses, murals depicting the Texas revolution and the state's largest collection of replicated historic Texas flags, loaned to the party by owner Tom Green.
Former Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby and wife Diana served as honorary chairs of the evening that kicked off with the state song, Texas Our Texas, and featured Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo announcerBill Bailey as master of ceremonies. Serving as chairs were Jan and John DeVault and Karen Hartnett and George Gayle. Dinner chairs were Arthur and Philamena Baird.
In the crowd partying for Texas were Judy and David Beck, Laura and John Beckworth, Sue Trammell Whitfield and Al Pardoe, Astrid and Gene Van Dyke, Betty and Jesse Tutor, Suzanne and Charles Milby, Beth and Jeff Early, Joanne and Welcome Wilson, Lucy and Willie Carl, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and wife Gwen and Sheila and John Blocker.
