Canine Caper
Howl-O-Ween haunts Hotel Derek with decked-out doggies & Erica Rose
Costumed canines convened at Hotel Derek for a spook-tacular Halloween bash benefiting Citizens for Animal Protection and Lone Star Boxer Rescue on Wednesday evening. Creativity reigned as guests boasted their decked-out dogs and indulged in boutique cocktails.
Participants placed bids in the event's to-die-for silent auction and brought cat and dog food to donate to Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston's aniMeals on Wheels program, which delivers pet food to hundreds of homebound seniors so they are not compelled to share their limited food and resources with their pet companion.
Among CultureMap's costume picks were Renée Weller's rottweiler Rokko, panting through an evil witch ensemble and David Lamb and his Rottweiler Mac, both of whom were awash in skin diving gear. Among the more poised pups was Chrissie deCesare's chihuahua Calvin, who dazzled in a petite leopard print Rodeo Drive getup. Attendee Sheree Peoples winning pair, Bogie and Zoe, bounded about the ballroom dressed respectively as an "astropug" and "ladypug."
Hometown reality star and attorney-in-training Erica Rose made an entrance dressed in a flower-power peace ensemble, with prize Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Shayna, and her five-month-old pup, Sila, in tow. The event also represented a chance reunion between Houston's leading socialite spaniels, as Shayna exchanged air kisses with the object of her 2009 tryst, Charles Williston O'Connell Yarborough III and Silla's brother, Julio Esteban Rodríguez Yarborough de Rose (who wasted no time staking his bid on a canvas easel in the silent auction).
Once all the yappers and yuppies cast their votes, Michelle Cott and her German Shorthaired Pointer Jackson, disguised as a rodeo cowboy, were declared best in show. All guests raised a glass (or Fiji water bowl) in praise of the ingenious doggie duds.
