Flying Nuns on Motorcycles
"Nun Run" draws two dozen Catholic sisters on motorcycles for 50-mile fundraiser
Once a year the Sisters of Charity shed their prayerful demeanor for a walk on the wild side. Make that a ride on the wild side with the annual CHRISTUS "Nun Run."
As many as two dozen ladies of the cloth joined the 250 participants recently for the 50-mile motorcycle spin from the St. Austin Center near the University of Houston campus to San Leon for a seafood lunch celebration at the Top Water Grill.
The day's activities included family time at the center with Dynamo mascot Diesel, fun and games and flu shots. Adding to the upbeat ambience was Gallery Furniture's Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale who emceed the fun that included presentation of "Nun Run" commemorative T-shirts.
Before the engines roared, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza blessed the motorcycles, sprinkling holy water on the machines. With nuns onboard, bikes were ready to roll, escorted by the Blue Knights.
Sponsored by CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, the event raises funds for CHRISTUS healthcare services for children in need. None could have been more pleased with the results than Sister Rosanne Popp, M.D., medical director of CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic and Les Cave, CHRISTUS Foundation board president.
