Sluggers and socialites go to bat for Houston Astros pitcher and his worthy cause
What: The HelpCureHD Luncheon
Where: Tootsies
The scoop: Houston Astros pitcher Joe Smith and TNT Sports reporter Allie LaForce, founders of HelpCureHD, hosted a private event to raise awareness about The HelpCureHD Foundation and Huntington Disease.
The private luncheon was crashed by surprise guests Jose Altuve, George Springer, Lance McCullers Jr., and other Astros players who dropped by to support fellow teammate Smith. The day started with a champagne reception to mingle, a fashion show, and a silent auction with an array of Houston Astros experiences and memorabilia. The high-energy event raised significant funds, thanks to a silent auction that included coveted tickets to The Masters.
HelpCureHD was inspired by Lee Smith, Joe Smith’s mother, who was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease in 2012. The organization was created to help those suffering from Huntington Disease by not only raising awareness, but also by eliminating the gene from future children through in-vitro treatments.
The Astros will help raise awareness with the upcoming HD Day at Minute Maid ballpark on September 15, when the team takes on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Who: George Springer, Lance McCullers Jr., Jose Altuve, Will Harris, Brad Peacock, Jeff Bagwell, Joanne King Herring, Ginni Mithoff, Jo Furr, Debbie and Rudy Festari, and Princess Tatiana Galitzine Sierra.
