The greatest fantasy football draft ever? Bob Allen leads a rollicking, high-stakes affair at Reliant
It's all about football in H-Town this season even in the charitable fundraising arena where more than a few non-profits are including plenty of pigskin elements in their endeavors. Most recent was the Boys & Girls Harbor Fantasy Football Draft Night at Reliant Stadium.
More then 400 supporters in colorful game day attire joined "commissioner" Bob Allen, KHOU Channel 11 sports director, in the football frenzy. With celebrity coaches — Pro Football Hall of Famers Elvin Bethea and Kenny Houston — making their presentations, the crowd launched with ardor into drafting their teams.
There was good reason to put heart and gridiron intelligence behind the selections. At season's end, the winner will receive two tickets to the 2014 Super Bowl and two season tickets to the Houston Texans for the 2014 season.
Event chairman Fred Newhouse kept the points on the board with a silent auction featuring autographed sports memorabilia, big boards and an exciting live auction. The proceeds will assist the residential care facility in providing safe harbor for children who are victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment.
Football fans putting together their dream teams included auction chair Rachel Price, Randy McGuire, Welcome Wilson, Denise and Sam Malone, Arthur Mooradian, Irene and Lupe Fraga, Susan and Gary Hanna, Kerry McDonough and Mia and Gardner Parker.
