A little night music sings for Houstonians still at play in Nantucket
"It was a superbly beautiful evening." So e-mails Franci Crane from her summer home in Nantucket where more than a few Houstonians are escaping the torrid temps of August.
She was referring to the benefit performance over the weekend by the Boston Pops. The 14th annual outdoor "Pops on Nantucket Concert" took place, as is tradition, on Jetties Beach where thousands arrived carrying beach chairs and blankets for their perches in the sand. The fancy folk bought higher-tiered tickets that included seating at linen-draped, flower-decked tables set up under the stars.
Crane reports that those in the reserved area were treated to cocktails, a raw bar and passed hors d'oeuvres before the concert began. Almost two hours of music — for which Katie Couricserved as emcee — included the awesome Rockapellas, a group of five men from New York who typically sing a cappella. The concert was followed by dessert and dancing. It was a big ka-ching! for the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, which has benefited from each of the August performances.
Key to the evening and the hospital is Maureen Hackett, who serves as hospital foundation chair and president and is a hospital trustee. She was accompanied by her husband,
Jim Hackett
. Houstonians in the mix included Dana Hurt, Elizabeth and Peter Wareing, Phoebe and Bobby Tudor, Mary and David Wolff, Jared Crane and Crystal Crane Thompson and Garrett Thompson.
