Houston's Power Couple
Houston's new power couple: Billionaire is engaged to his son's wealthy mother-in-law
If bank accounts are all that matters in the world of matrimonial bliss, one might say that 85-year-old Fayez Sarofim, No. 273 on Forbes' list of richest Americans, is Houston's most eligible bachelor. But not for long.
Over the weekend, the Sphinx, as he is often referred to for his quiet, somber manner, became engaged to Houston/New Orleans businesswoman and Best Dressed honoreeSusan Krohn, no small time player herself when it comes to personal wealth.

A wedding date is yet to be determined. But the gates have opened on the billionaire lifestyle that includes private jets, multiple homes, mega-yacht vacations on the French Riviera and tooling around town in a Rolls Royce. Not that this lifestyle is new to Susan. Her ex, oilman Tracy Krohn, has enjoyed his time on the Forbes richest list. And Susan is a success in her own right, founder and owner of Brooke Staffing Companies and owner of New Orleans Auction Galleries.
It is a family affair, so to speak. In May, Sarofim's son, Phillip Sarofim, and Susan's glamorous daughter, Lori Krohn, were wed in Hawaii. Today, the young couple lives in the River Oaks mansion that Susan bought when she moved to Houston from hometown New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. She recently moved into a swank River Oaks property just a few blocks away.
Maintaining strong New Orleans ties, Susan picked up her engagement ring from Valobra Jewlery & Antiques where fellow New Orleans transplant Franco Valobra assisted with the selection. We are told that Fayez wanted something grand for his bride but she, not known for carat flash, demurred, preferring a ring that she "could wear every day."
Both Fayez and Susan are recognized for their philanthropy, he regularly contributing generously to major capital campaigns and charity events, she doing so as well and supporting the Knowledge Arts Foundation of which she is co-founder.
