Houston party animals rep hometown champs and raise funds for furry friends
What: Mr. Magoo’s “We are the Champions!” gala benefiting Citizens for Animal Protection
Where:Bayou City Event Center
The scoop: Two passions unite Houstonians: their sports teams and their dogs. Both were recently celebrated at the Mr. Magoo’s “We are the Champions!” shindig benefiting Citizens for Animal Protection.
The 225 party guests were directed to dress as their favorite sports champion. That meant plenty of Houston Astros in the house, as well as Houston Rockets, the Houston Dynamo, and even Houston Texans (let’s hope, yes?). Typical of a Houston crowd, other cities were represented, such as the New York Yankees, the Tampa Bay Rays, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and — ugh — the Dallas Cowboys. A WWE champ and a group of bunnies also popped up in the lively mix.
The spunky event celebrating sports and furry friends, raising $100,000 for CAP (a Ken Hoffman favorite). Houston animal lovers Bruce Padilla and Shelby Kibodeaux chaired; Michelle Mantor, publisher of Houston PetTalk Magazine, served as honorary chair. The soiree honored Big Fix Houston, Unity for a Solution and local animal advocate, Sonia Soto.
During the live auction, emcee Sharron Melton urged attendees to bid big for a sunset Galveston Bay cruise aboard mayoral candidate Bill King’s yacht. Each of the three cruises sold for $6,000 each — once King promised to name three fixed potholes after the winning bidders (should he win the mayorship).
The party animals hit the stage for the fashion show, highlighted by Celebrity Pet of the Year honorees Dandy — with owner Beth Wolff — and Beauregard with owner Edna Meyer-Nelson. The four will be honored at the annual CAP gala, which will be titled “A Royal Affair,” and held at the Royal Sonesta hotel on November 16.
In keeping with the sporting theme, guests noshed on tailgating fare, including chicken and waffles, BBQ sliders, mac and cheese, and fried okra, then burned off the calories on the dance floor.
