Shelby's Social Diary
Lynn Wyatt, Lester Smith among local celebs dancing with the stars Houston style
I don't recall seeing social phenom Lynn Wyatt spin around the dance floor much at the black-tie galas where she is such an icon. Phoebe Tudor occasionally. But I have seen the dashing Monsour Taghdisi shake his booty with the best of them and lithe Diane Lokey Farb cut a rug like a pro. And what about Pat Burk? He's such a white kinda guy.
Dancing prowess notwithstanding, this collection of Houston philanthropists and Lester Smith, a proven ballroom dance expert, are going to test their twinkle toes in a unique dance competition this fall in a dinner evening benefiting Houston Ballet. "Dancing With the Houston Stars!" will team the local celebs with retired dancers from Houston Ballet.
Each couple will present a three-minute routine of their choosing and the dinner audience will vote on their fave. These dance masters won't be dancing in just any old ballroom. This benefit takes place in the art-filled home of John and Becca Cason Thrash where Andy Warhol's Marilyns will look on. Guests will be seated around the infamous indoor swimming pool, which on this night will be covered and transformed into a professional dance floor.
The dance pros joining the celebs will be Tyann Clement, former soloist and now the ballet's institutional giving manager; Kristine Richmond, who now teaches at the Houston Ballet academy; Dawn Scannell, who today is part owner and designer at Peran & Scannell jewelers; Phillip Broomhead, ballet master; Damian Schwiethale and former principal Sean Kelly.
The dance soirée does not come cheap. Tickets in the great room are $1,000 each for the Sept. 24 event. Ringside seating in the pool room is $2,000 per person.
