Guns do good: Shooting competition raises more than $770,000 for children in Houston
Certainly, Child Advocates' "Pull for Kids Classic" reached a ripe maturity with its 21st annual shooting competition and after-party, which earned the non-profit more than $770,000.
Becky and David Davis chaired the doubleheader that began in the morning at American Shooting Centers with 300 participating in the sporting clays tournament and continued that evening at the Bayou City Event Center where 750 guests partied to "An Evening Amongst the Stars" theme.
While light-heartedness prevailed, the evening had its serious moments when court appointed advocate Shiloh Carter introduced Nicole Reed, whom she helped escape nine years of child abuse. (Nicole has been adopted and is thriving.) The audience gave the duo a standing ovation.
Contributing to the evening's success were committee chairs Bernadette Alvarez, Sheryl and Joel Androphy, Jeff Birmingham, Rick Burnett, Stacey and Ron Chovanec, Eddy De Los Santos, Cherie Hassenflu and Dolly Dawson Thomas.
Helping raise six-figure funds, including $110,000 from the Sponsor a Child appeal, were Child Advocates CEO Sonya Galvan, Grace and Rocky Holmes, Genevieve and Nathan Kroeker, Brooke and Bob Krenzelok, Sindi and Mike Sonnier and Lynda Lighthouse Transier.
