2 of Houston's most popular Black-owned nightclubs abruptly close
Kamp has closed.
Two tentpoles of Houston’s nightlife scene abruptly closed over the weekend. Both Kamp and The Address have shuttered, according to various media reports.
In a social media post, the owners of Kamp stated that they’d been unable to agree to terms on a lease extension for the club. It also referenced “ongoing sound and parking challenges with our neighbors,” an acknowledgement of area residents’ frequent complaints about the business.
ALife Hospitality opened Kamp in the summer of 2020. Located in the former Beaver’s West space at 6025 Westheimer Rd., the massive indoor-outdoor bar became known for its lavish parties that helped build Houston’s reputation as a tourist destination.
From the beginning, Kamp’s popularity drew controversy. In 2021, former Mayor Sylvester Turner called Kamp out for not adhering to Covid protocols.
The Address closed on Sunday after nine years in business, Chron reports. Located in Third Ward, the venue was known for its lively Sunday parties.
Houstonian comedian Chinedu Ogu, who frequently comments on local topics, posted his own thoughts on The Address closing. In the clip, he takes aim at the club for its high prices, indifferent service, and lack of a dancefloor.
