Play, sing, dance, recite — Pink at the Brown celebrates the best of H-Town'sperforming arts
On the 25th anniversary of the opening of Wortham Theater Center, the main stage in the grand hall gloriously reverberated with talent from across the city's rich landscape of the performing arts as the Pink Ribbons Project presented its annual fundraiser Pink at the Brown.
Da Camera of Houston, Houston Ballet, the Alley Theatre, Society for the Performing Arts, Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Symphony each contributed to the evening's entertainment and program that saluted three individuals and one foundation.
Taking bows at a pre-performance underwriter recognition dinner in Houston Ballet's Center for Dance were Cora Sue Mach as breast cancer survivor honoree, C.C. Conner as arts advocate honoree, M.D. Anderson chief Dr. Ron DePinho as physician honoree and Elizabeth Blanton Wareing and Jack Blanton representing the honored Scurlock Foundation.
On accepting his award, DePinho noted, "Houston has heart. You care. This organization is one of many examples of how people work together to do good."
Pulling the arts organizations together under one performance umbrella could be no easy task but Pink Ribbons Project founders Susan Rafte and Jane Weiner have succeeded in creating this delightful evening of talent. Thursday night's fundraiser was chaired by S. Shawn Stephens with Shelly Power serving as artistic chair.
Arts leaders enjoying the dinner underwritten by Mach Industrial Group, the Wortham peformances and the dessert reception that followed in the Grand Foyer of the theater center were Houston Ballet executive direcor Jim Nelson, Houston ballet artistic director Stanton Welch, Houston Grand Opera managing director Perryn Leech and Alley Theatre managing director Dean Gladden.
Among the power crowd going from the pre-performance dinner through to the dessert reception were Loubel and Al Galik, Kristy and Chris Bradshaw, Samira Salman, Ginger Blanton, Kathy and Marty Goossen, Peter Wareing, Joella and Steve Mach, Sidney Faust, Carmen and Butch Mach, Annette Galik and Hal Kuntz.
