The ladies in red were a lauded and powerful force at the Crisis Interventiondinner
Crisis Intervention of Houston had a brilliant idea a number of years ago — honor a group of women whose names all begin with the same letter. This year, it was the "M"s who were saluted at the gala dinner at The Corinthian.
"The Magic of M" honorees, each wearing red and each a powerful force in her own right, were Marita Fairbanks, Melanie Gray, Maureen Hackett, Melanie Lawson and Melissa Mithoff. Representing community service and leadership in arenas such as art, health care, law and the performing arts, these women reflect much of what is good about volunteerism in Houston.
Claudia Contreras chaired the record-breaking evening that raised $250,000 for Crisis Hotline and other services of CIH.
Following video tributes to each of the honorees, a life-sized Minnie Mouse appeared on stage to give her acceptance speech for her "Magic of M" award. Realizing that the real honorees were just off stage, she skittered away to the entertainment of the crowd of more than 350.
Some unknowing guests were caught by surprise by rambling magician Curt Miller, who entertained during the cocktail hour. No one, however, was left nonplussed by the sounds of Sha'on & the Girls with Success from New Orleans, who inspired plenty of dance floor action.
