Bouncing "Bunnies on the Bayou" sets world record
It was a great weekend to be gay in Houston. After a series of blow-outs in conjunction with Jungle Houston, the party crowd resurrected Easter afternoon for the 31st annual "Bunnies on the Bayou" at Wortham Center's Fish Plaza - setting a record for the "World's Largest Annual Outdoor Cocktail Fundraiser."
A massive crowd cheered hip-hop hurray at the 31 flavors-themed extravaganza. Taking inspiration from Baskin Robbins, guests channeled numerous pun-filled ice cream flavors like Same Sex Strawberry, Significant Other Surprise, Blueberry Stud Muffin and Safe Sex Sherbet.
And the bunny bonanza was sweet indeed, raising funds for a swath of local charities. Reported Bunnies board President, Vince Flickinger, "This is a tremendous event for us. Turn-out is amazing - we're actually setting the record, it's never been established. We just have to go through all the red tape at Guinness, they'll approve it, and hopefully we'll establish a world record."
The fête drew the entire range of friends and fetishes, reflecting the initiative's decades-long legacy. Explained Host Emeritus Jude Simms, "I was in this organization for 17 years, and I gotta tell you, when I was president, I had 30 hosts including myself organizing the party. These guys do it with 15, and I don't know how they do it. Kudos to them, the organizational skill is phenomenal."
Added Simms, "This is the first year we've got two DJs, with one being a female. We're trying to tap into the lesbian market and get lesbian hosts. I mean, we're going for the Guinness Book of World Records here."
The hundreds of party people on hand — gay and gay friendly — some from as far away as New York and California celebrated for five hours to the beats of DJ Joy DeLa O and DJ Tad and waved to the Flyboys of Flag Troupe Houston as they whirled their banners in uncanny precision. Afterwards, the most tenacious attendees made their way to ROCBAR for the official after party, toasting big dollars raised for 31 organizations such as AIDS Foundation Houston, Bering Omega Community Services, PFLAG and Stone Soup Fund.
For some, the party got started early with a late-morning mixer hosted by Mark Sullivan and Cerón on the eighth-story pool deck of their posh pied-à-terre, One Park Place. Guests watched the clouds part while sipping Bloody Marys and pitchers of mimosas. Other than the standard gaggle of pretty young things, it was a fab confab of Houston's media men. Taking part in the midday merriment were Stuart Rosenberg of Studio Communications, Jarrod Klawinsky of 002, and Modern Luxury madman Jeff Gremillion. Also seen sipping among the skyscrapers were real estate wiz KC Gifford and Houston Grand Opera's Matthew Ryan Redden.
Ever the dandy diva, a seersucker-studded Cerón absconded into the highrise for just a moment before resurfacing in an ivory and black satin-laced tuxedo jacket paired with slick shorts. "I pulled a Becca," the luxe locks tycoon chuckled with a devilish grin, adding, "When are we hopping over to the party?"
