Farmers market party: Fresh from the garden, the Urban Harvest fundraising feastwows diners
Farmers market fare has probably never been presented more elegantly than it was for the annual Urban Harvest fundraising dinner held at Trevisio and thoughtfully orchestrated by executive chef Jon Buchanan.
Guests savored Buchanan's creations from local, seasonal sources and Urban Harvest vendors, getting a taste of what awaits at farmers markets held across the city throughout the week.
Appropriately, the evening honored Laura Spanjian, director of sustainability for the City of Houston, who was recognized not only for a job well done but also for her work encouraging composting, recycling, local food production and the City Hall Farmers Market.
The evening raised $140,000 for Urban Harvest programs that include the farmers markets, community gardens, gardening classes and school gardens. And that was good news for dinner chairs Mary Sommers Pyne and Sam Pyne.
Enthusiastic supporters of the cause included Susan Christian, Wendy Kelsey, Alfred Moran and Sarah Odem, Nancy and Robert Peiser, Trevisio's Tracy Vaught, Tina and Joe Pyne, Gracie Cavnar, Terry Hershey, Meredith Riddle, Garland Kerr and Jim Blackburn and Marguerite and Chris Johnson.
