Houstonians feast for Harvey relief at Astros owner's hot spot
What: UTHealth’s sixth annual Tasting Dinner benefiting the Children’s Learning Institute
Where:Potente
The scoop: Event Co-Chairs Harriet and Joe Foster, Nancy and Bryan Ruez, and Caroline and William Ruez welcomed guests to Potente, a new restaurant belonging to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, to experience a five-course Italian meal. UTHealth patrons enjoyed an Italian feast in support of classrooms using Texas School Ready, a program developed by the Children’s Learning Institute (CLI) at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. Fund raised during the event will be used to restore the classrooms of the program, which lost classroom libraries, curriculum materials, and equipment because of Hurricane Harvey.
“It was a pleasure and an honor working with Dr. Susan Landry and her staff,” said Nancy Ruez, event co-chair. “Their vision and enthusiasm for improving the quality of children’s education in our community is inspiring and, on behalf of the other event chairs, we are thrilled that the Tasting Dinner was a roaring success!”
“The Tasting Dinner celebrates the passion and commitment our community shares to create a quality learning environment for all children. Thanks to CLI’s internationally recognized classroom curriculum, teacher mentoring and clinical programs, and applied research, which is the foundation of all our programs and resources, we are able to ensure that every child is equipped to learn and able to excel,” said Susan Landry, Ph.D., founder and director of the Children’s Learning Institute. “The amazing fundraising efforts of the host committee and the dedicated people who attended this year’s Tasting Dinner have helped us raise more than $180,000 in support of the Texas School Ready classrooms that were affected by Hurricane Harvey.” Danny Trace, executive chef for Potente, prepared a lavish five-course dinner.
