    Houston Restaurant Weeks serves up big 2022 total for local charity

    Houstonians did their part to help the less fortunate during Houston Restaurant Weeks. Organized by the Cleverley Stone Foundation, this year's 36 day charity dining event raised $1,240,811 million for the Houston Food Bank.

    Founded by Cleverley Stone in 2003 and continued by her daughter Katie Stone Cappuccio through the foundation, Houston Restaurant Weeks partners with local restaurants to raise money for the Food Bank. Participating establishments serve prix fixe menus at set price points that trigger a corresponding donation to the foundation, which then makes a donation to the Food Bank. In 2022, restaurants offered $25 lunch and brunch menus and $39 and $55 dinner menus that resulted in $2, $4, and $6 donations.

    All that eating and drinking allowed Houston Restaurant Weeks to donate over $300,000 more than last year's total, which was $933,820. At the time, organizers lowered donation amounts to $1, $3, or $5 due to the lingering affects of the pandemic.

    Overall, Houston Restaurant Weeks has raised over $18.8 million for the Food Bank. Since the non-profit turns every dollar into three meals, the event has generated more than 56.4 million meals.

    “The Houston Food Bank is again honored to be the beneficiary of Houston Restaurant Weeks, and work with Katie Stone to help carry on the legacy of her cherished mother Cleverley Stone," Food Bank president & CEO Brian Greene said in a statement. “This unique event in many ways supports both restaurants and the communities we call home.”

    Houston Restaurant Weeks will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year from August 1 until September 4. Eat Drink HTX, the Foundation's event for more casual, less expensive restaurants, will return for its second year February 15-28.

    Organizers also released the top 10 restaurants that made the largest donations. They are:

    • Brennan's of Houston: $35,850
    • Traveler’s Table: $25,908
    • MAD Houston: $25,326
    • Trattoria Sofia: $25,104
    • Eddie V's Prime Seafood – City Centre: $22,032
    • Étoile Cuisine et Bar: $19,222
    • Le Colonial: $19,126
    • Mastros: $18,036
    • Pappas Bros. Steakhouse – Downtown Houston: $17,160

    Shuttered Houston restaurant revived for 1 night only at Canada Day pop-up

    One of the saddest restaurant closures of 2025 will get a one-night-only revival. Favorite dishes from Riel will return at Chardon on Sunday, June 28 for an event being called “Booze Can Sunday.”

    While a French fine dining restaurant might seem like an unlikely host for a Riel revival, Chardon executive chef E.J. Miller once served as Riel’s opening sous chef. Miller invited his former boss, Riel chef-owner Ryan Lachaine, to join him for a pop-up that honors Canada Day.

    Together, the duo will serve some of Riel’s most popular dishes, including:

    • Truffle and Caviar Pierogies
    • Steak Au Poivre Poutine with Cheese Curds
    • Deli Dog
    • Montreal Smoked Meat Sliders
    • Torche Kolaches
    • Mushroom Empanadas
    • Gator Karaage
    • Maple Whiskey Soft Serve with Foie Caram

    The day will also feature drink specials such as Canadian Jell-O Shots, Molson X, Canadian Club, Old Grand-Dad, and more. Robin Wong, a co-owner of Blood Bros. BBQ and a successful DJ, will spin throughout the event.

    The pop-up will serve Riel's caviar and truffle pierogi.

    "Riel was a special place for a lot of people, and Booze Can Sunday was always one of the most anticipated events of the week," said Miller. "Ryan and I wanted to bring back that energy for one day, celebrate the restaurant that meant so much to us, and give guests a chance to revisit some of the dishes and memories they loved."

    Riel opened in January 2017 and closed in August 2025. In between, it earned wide acclaim for the way Lachaine blended his Canadian upbringing and Ukrainian heritage with the modern Gulf Coast cuisine he learned while working at restaurants such as Reef and Underbelly.

    Currently, Lachaine works as the executive chef at River Oaks restaurant State of Grace. He added two Riel signatures to State of Grace’s menu — the caviar tater tots and signature butter burgers.

    Chardon, which earned a Best New Restaurant nomination in the 2026 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards for its blend of classic French fare with Texas ingredients, opened in February 2025. In addition to Riel, Miller’s resume includes SaltAir Seafood Kitchen, International Smoke, and Muse.

    Booze Can Sunday takes place from 3-9 pm. Attendees are encouraged to register on Eventbrite.
