Get to know Urban South Brewery, Houston's go-to for out-there beers
Beer lovers in the South haven been knocking back Urban South Brewery's Hazy Juicy IPAs and American Lagers since 2016, when the second largest brewery in Louisiana debuted in New Orleans.
In just seven short years, distribution had stretched all the way from Texas to Florida and up to Tennessee, so it only made sense for Urban South to open its first satellite brewery in Houston in February 2020.
Nestled between the Heights and Montrose neighborhoods, Urban South HTX was built to be an innovative R&D hub for the company, putting a Houston spin on both popular and out-there beer styles.
Now, hop-heads clamor to try seasonal releases like the Rocket Pop Gose and Red Nose Reinbeer Cranberry Wheat, and knock back "the Trinity" — Paradise Park American Lager, Lime Cucumber Gose, and Houston’s very own HTX IPA — all year long.
Besides churning out lagers, IPAs, stouts, and their signature fruited sours, Urban South offers a fun, colorful, family-friendly, and air conditioned taproom that's open seven days a week.
Parched people can head to the taproom for daily events, weekly beer releases, happy hours, and pop-up food trucks. To always stay in the know, follow Urban South's social media or sign up for the weekly newsletter on the website.
The brewery also puts community first, regularly hosting events, organizing collaborations and donations with local nonprofits, and partnering with community programs and charities.
"Urban South has built its reputation on taking the heritage of European beer styles but putting our own Americanized twist on them," says founder and president Jacob Landry. "We brew with the South in mind, focusing on light, refreshing styles and flavors utilizing a variety of brewing techniques. The fun ingredients we like to use can range anywhere from herbs and spices to fresh fruits and vegetables and, of course, our favorite candies and adjunct additions like white chocolate, marshmallow, and ice cream."
Recently, Urban South collaborated with hip hop legend Juvenile, turning his favorite Arnold Palmer drink into a fun hard iced tea with lemonade called Juvie Juice.
Up next? Look for the popular Oktoberfest Marzen Lager to hit shelves and taps this fall.
You can find Urban South beers in bars, restaurants, and local bottle shops, as well as stores such as HEB, Total Wine, Spec's, Whole Foods Market, and Kroger, all the way from Galveston to College Station.
