Grocery sneak peek: New Heights Kroger is all about organic produce, beer andStarbucks
Houston, meet your newest Heights-area grocery store: Party Kroger, so nicknamed for its proximity to Party Boy and Arne's Warehouse.
The store has set its grand opening for Friday, the same date as the new Walmart SuperCenter just one mile down the road — but if Kroger is at all worried about the competition, this grocer isn't letting on.
During a sneak peek tour on Wednesday, employees were bustling to stock shelves, wrap up training and put last-minute touches on the space, a 79,000-square-foot Signature store that caters to the health-conscious customers of the area.
This Kroger has a produce section with more than 100 organic items, some from Texas farmers, plus exotic fruits and vegetables.
To that end, this Kroger has a produce section with more than 100 organic items, some from Texas farmers, plus exotic fruits and vegetables and a "Pepper Headquarters" offering dozens of varieties.
Locally-raised beef in the butcher shop, Gulf-caught fish in the seafood market and a Nature's Market Shop serve up additional healthy fare.
Its beer section focuses on craft brews and local varieties from Leprechaun Cider, Karbach Brewing Co. and Saint Arnold Brewing Company. It will be stocked with a few cases of the latter brewery's highly sought-after Pumpkinator for opening day.
The whole front section of the store is a response to changing consumer trends: An in-store Starbucks and adjoining lounge that offers free WiFi; a sushi bar and a salad bar, a sandwich and panini shop; plus hot, chef-prepared dishes for lunch or dinner on the go.
Will these features be enough to win you over to Kroger's side in the grocery war?
