koffeteria opens soon
Acclaimed TV chef's eagerly anticipated new bakery heats up in EaDo
EaDo’s eagerly anticipated new bakery will make its debut next month. Kofferteria will open November 15 at 1110 Hutchins St, chef-owner Vanarich Kuch announced.
As CultureMap previously reported, Kuch, a Top Chef: Just Desserts veteran best known locally for his time at Tiny Boxwoods, will draw both his professional experiences and his Cambodian heritage to create the cafe’s menu.
In addition to bakery staples like cookies, tarts, and petit gâteau, Kuch tells CultureMap he’s planning an extensive savory menu with kolaches, quiches, and croissants. Once the shop has settled in, he plans to adds restaurant-style plated desserts.
Kuch has caused a bit of a stir on social media as he’s previewed some of his wilder creations such as the beef pho croissant and the Hot Cheetos croissant. He’s also showed a tarte tatin, focaccia, and several different flavors of ice cream on Instagram.
The most obvious question is, will he serve the same chocolate chip cookie he made at Tiny Boxwoods?
“I have my own version of a chocolate chip cookie that goes up pretty well,” he says. “It’s underbaked with a little well in the middle so you can add a scoop of ice cream. It’s more like a double chocolate chip cookie with dark chocolate and caramelized white chocolate.”
Just as much care has gone into the cafe’s design. Kuch says he’s sourced mid-century modern furniture from thrift stores and estate sales. A polished concrete floor will give the space a slightly industrial feel. Hexagon shapes in the front recall a honeycomb, and the light pendants look like Hershey’s kisses.
EaDo may be known primarily for its bar scene, but Kuch’s creations look poised to make the area a destination for anyone with a sweet tooth.
