Restaurants in downtown Houston are tricky propositions — just as a couple with promise open (Barnaby's Cafe, the forthcoming Burger Guys), another one closes (RIP Samba Grille).
However Batanga, the recently announced concept from Restaurant Traveler blogger Maya Fasthoff and family, has a lot working in its favor.
The space (which once held Wasabi Japanese restaurant) is around the corner from Market Square Park, which holds the lion's share of downtown's successful above-ground restaurant concepts, and next door to the much-anticipated OKRA Charity Saloon.
Batanga will offer Latin American tapas, including dishes sourced from everywhere from Peru and Argentina to Portugal and Spain, plus "exotic" drinks and live Latin music, plus a 3,600-square-foot outdoor patio.
Unlike many downtown concepts, Batanga isn't just focusing on lunch, instead planning dinner and Sunday brunch when it opens in late 2012 or early 2013.
