Bottoms Up! Best Bartender shows how to make the perfect julep — with a bit of spice
September is National Bourbon Heritage Month and we’re celebrating with Alba Huerta, owner and bartender at Julep.
The Washington Avenue locale commemorates the spirit with Southern roots with its addition of six new cocktails on the menu, a daily bourbon sampling and a special tasting of Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 23-year ($70 per person; Tuesday (Sept. 23) at 6 p.m.)
Huerta, CultureMap’s Tastemaker Best Bartender Award winner, takes us behind the bar (see video above) and showcases one of four namesake house specialties, the Spiced Julep (spices, muddled mint leaves, unrefined sugar syrup, Jamaican rum and Applejack liquor).
She also demonstrates how to make the new fast favorite, the Tops and Bottoms cocktail (sunflower-infused rum, Byrrh Grand Quinquina apertif and fruity pamplemousse rose liqueur).
Expect new cocktails for fall soon from the popular bar, currently in the running for Food & Wine Magazine’s “The People’s Best New Bar” title.
Bottoms up and cheers from CultureMap and Julep!
