Mr. Hank Wiggins
For about a quarter century, Hank's Ice Cream has reigned supreme in Houston, serving old-fashioned, creamy scoops and cones in the shadow of the Astrodome. But one familiar fixture is missing these days — patriarch Hank Wiggins, who along with wife Okemah has been a friendly face manning the counter since the beginning.
According to his family at the ice cream parlor, Hank had a bad fall a few months ago and has been in and out of the hospital since then. His family is continuing to run the store, and stresses that nothing has changed about the place or Hank's ice cream recipes. The only update has been closing at 8 p.m. every day instead of 9 p.m. to better work with hospital hours.
If you stop in at Hank's — and if you haven't tried the banana pudding ice cream, you really need to — let them know you're thinking of Hank and hoping to see him well enough to stop by the store soon.
