Live Demo Sept. 15
Giada de Laurentiis talks about fans, fame and the search for a good restaurantin Houston
They say never trust a skinny chef, but pretty, petite Giada de Laurentiis has been one of America's favorite television chefs for years, bringing her love of mascarpone, enthusiastic tasting reactions and trademark Italian pronunciation into American homes via shows like Everyday Italian and Giada at Home and as the author of six cookbooks, most recently Weeknights with Giada.
Born in Italy to a distinguished family (grandfather Dino de Laurentiis was a legendary film producer and grandmother Silvana Mangano was a famous Italian actress) but raised in California, De Laurentiis studied at Le Cordon Bleu and worked as a chef before breaking into television.
Let's help Giada out, Houston. What's one restaurant that she absolutely must try?
Giada is heading to Houston on Sept. 15 as part of the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show, where she'll perform a live demonstration in the Celebrity Theater, meet and greet fans and sign copies of her cookbook. Before her trip, de Laurentiis took time to answer some questions from CultureMap via email.
CultureMap: Most of your fans are familiar with you through television and through your cookbooks, so how is this live experience different for you and for people in the crowd?
Giada de Laurentiis: I don't do many live events because of my work schedule, so when I do them it's a treat for me to interact with my fans and give them a chance to ask me questions they don't usually have a chance to ask. And I enjoy cooking with them too!!
CM: I know your grandfather owned a restaurant and you once worked under Wolfgang Puck at Spago. Who or what had the greatest influence on you as a chef?
GDL: I always say I'm a product of three people... My Grandfather who passed on the passion of food. My Aunt Raffy who is my cooking partner & constant source of inspiration and my Mom who had four kids to feed and wanted to get a nutritious meal on the table quickly.
CM: After 10 years on Food Network, how do you come up with new ideas? What inspires you?
GDL: I'm inspired by traveling, people I meet, my fans (through social media) and of course my family!
CM: Is this your first trip to Houston? Is there anything you are looking forward to eating or any place or restaurant you are planning to go?
GDL: I've been to Houston before.... But have never had the time to go out and enjoy a meal. Any suggestions?
