It's been a busy August, we know. Between Caffe Bello, Just August Project and trips to the lake, it seems like Houston Restaurant Week must always wait until another day.
So if you've put off a dinner (or lunch) of sybaritic indulgence, now is the time to move — Restaurant "Week" ends on Saturday.
So whether you missed the CultureMap cheat sheet or ate through it and are ready for more, here are six restaurants — one for each day left of Houston Restaurant Week — that must be tasted.
Houston has an abundance of adorable converted houses preparing food for lucky neighbors, but by any estimation the best is Au Petit Paris. Classically, painstakingly French, the setting may be humble but the cooking is far from it — and outside this week, it's priced to match.
2. Kata Robata
Before sous chef Jean-Philippe Gaston heads to Reef, sample the amazing mix from raw bar to short rib that he and chef Hori-san are known for. From sashimi and ginger lamb lollipops to chocolate chip beignets and mochi ice cream, the most difficult part of the meal is choosing just one offering from each course.
Our suggestion: Go in a group and share.
The prize for the most underappreciated dining room in town goes to Mockingbird Bistro. Tucked off Welch between River Oaks and Montrose, the food is always on point, never showy, and the service is outstanding. Perhaps John Sheely should get into some Twitter fights?
Or maybe I should just mention the dessert course is a trio of the house specialties: Apple bread pudding, chocolate truffle and a mini crème brûlée.
4. Catalan
This foodie favorite makes the list by serving their signature dishes — roasted pork belly, suckling pig, and two sets of street food — on the prix fixe menu.
5. The Palm
Look in the mirror and ask yourself: What would Don Draper/Joan Holloway do?
Dress accordingly and then take your dapper self (and that cute secretary/doctor) to The Palm, where mid-century swagger still reigns. There's nothing new here, just American standards like lobster bisque, filet mignon, and New York cheesecake — proof that trends fade but the classics are always in style.
6. Tony's
It's a magnet for the social set, but Tony's endures not out of habit or connections but because the Vallones know how to make guests feel special. OK, the mussels Marechiaro and the veal scaloppine Vesuvio are factors, too.
