Houston brewpub dreams die: Scott Metzger "indefinitely suspends" Freetail'sdowntown plans
Back in May, CultureMap reported that Houston was finally set to get a brewpub. The city's been without a working brewpub since Two Rows in Rice Village closed in October 2010.
Scott Metzger, founder and CEO of Freetail Brewing Co., the San Antonio-based brewpub, planned to expand to Houston.
The location was never confirmed but most speculated that, due to the sheer size of the purported downtown space, Freetail's Houston location would be on the corner of Main and Prairie Streets, catty corner from the now-shuttered Byrd's market.
News broke Wednesday afternoon on Twitter, however, that Metzger had indefinitely suspended those plans — unfortunate news that's now confirmed by Downtown Houston Alliance.
Metzger himself has gone into self-imposed hiding, taking a hiatus from Twitter but responding to CultureMap via email: "At the end of the day it came down to access to capital — and I just couldn’t get that access."
He elaborated in a statement released by the Downtown Alliance: “As I moved forward with the Freetail Houston project, I began to run into an increasing level of resistance in capital markets. A brewpub is a good project for downtown Houston, but the deal is simply not there for me at this time."
Metzger made clear in the statement released by the Downtown Alliance that the reasons for halting the project were purely financial.
Hey, as anyone who made it through high school knows, suspension is not expulsion. Houston needs a brewpub. Let's see if we can't make it happen.
