Iconic Lesbian Lounge up for sale
Another Montrose bar in danger of shuttering: Don't take Chances
First the loss of Lilith Fair — now Chances?
Houston may soon lose its most iconic lesbian lounge: Shrouded in palms at Westheimer and Waugh, the 13,767 square-foot building housing Chances is on the market.
The mega-club, whose building dates to 1954, has cultivated a reputation dating to 1994 as the meeting spot for girls who like girls (who might also like body shots), but that legacy is on the verge of crumbling. Reads the real estate listing:
Entire block in busy Midtown commercial area with frontage on Westheimer and street access on Waugh, Waughcrest and California streets. Prime retail/restaurant/redevelopment space with already existing building, currently in use as a nightclub."
Once closed, Chances will join a long list of shuttered Montrose landmarks: Mary's, Hollywood Video, Felix's — and most recently — Decades, Ernie's and Skybar.
However, there is a chance that we won't be losing Chances — the owners told the Houston Press that they will keep the four-bar club rocking until it sells, which, in a slightly slumping real estate market, may not happen (the building has already been for sale for a couple of months). Still, we're on the verge of asking Mayor Annise Parker to appoint a special task-force for sustaining Montrose watering holes — and preventing a growing class of idle lesbians.
