Drink heaven: Anvil dubbed one of America's 10 best cocktail bars
First it was the James Beard Foundation, now it's Travel + Leisure — word is out about the world-class cocktails being served up at Anvil Bar & Refuge. Just months after partner Bobby Heugel earned a James Beard semifinalist nod, Travel + Leisure has named the bar one of the top 10 in the country on its list of "America's Best Cocktail Bars."
The magazine skips bars that are high on pretension ("big mustaches and sleeve garters and 12 ingredients in a drink do not an excellent bar make") and instead focuses on 10 "places where you sip an excellent cocktail and still get amiable, top-notch service as well."
Anvil, the second bar on the list (the bars aren't explicitly numbered, but I'll go out on a limb and say it ranks Anvil at No. 2), gets props for its dramatic industrial-chic look, as well as for its drinks and the tiki nights on Tuesdays in particular.
"The tastes are bright and fresh, and the bar deftly melds fresh ingredients, bold spirits, and classic proportions to make the drinks sing, whether they’re revivals or a trip into the unknown," Travel + Leisure writes.
Do you think Anvil is the best bar in America? What other Houston watering holes deserve to make the list?
