New Heights Donuts Shop Buzz
Much-anticipated new Heights donuts shop is giving away free donuts: Talk about opening with style
Nearly a year and a half after the first rumblings of a brick-and-mortar doughnut shop from Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski — owners of the popular food truck H-town StrEATs — Hugs & Donuts is finally a reality. Hill and Opaleski raised more than $58,000 on Kickstarter last June and July to open the gourmet donut and kolache shop, located next to Fat Cat Creamery at North Shepherd and West 19th Street in The Heights.
Hugs & Donuts, now in a soft opening stage, is putting the finishing touches on recipes and training staff, as well as offering free donuts and coffee to customers who stop by on Friday during business hours — from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. — or until they run out. You read that correctly: Free donuts.
Although the group posted on Kickstarter that kolaches won't be available this week, the eatery is testing out a number of varieties of donuts (and apple fritters, too), so come prepared to eat some free sweet treats with a cup of joe.
The shop will be open on Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m., but will close on Sunday before opening fully on Monday (sorry, no more free donuts then), according to its Facebook page.
