Oxheart might be only a week old, but chef/owner Justin Yu is already getting national attention. GQ tapped Yu for its weekly travel feature, The Short Order, offering unorthodox guides to great food cities (Charleston, New York, Chicago) from talented local chefs.
Yu includes some restaurants and bars that are favorites among the food industry crowd, including Tacos Tierra Caliente, Pho Binh by Night, Anvil Bar & Refuge, 13 Celsius, Greenway Coffee and Tea and Paulie's, where he and wife Karen Man held their final Money Cat brunch.
But Yu also lets readers into a few of Houston's less-well-known food treasures, including Louisiana Foods' Total Catch Market and the Emile St. community gardens in the East End.
He also comes out as a fan of estate sales and resale shops — particularly Montrose's Bluebird Circle — and Chinatown's FIT, which Yu describes as a "Japanese dollar store" and is apparently the source of the 22 money cats he has strategically placed around Oxheart.
What do you think of Yu's GQ picks? What other Houston chefs should be writing city guides?
