A funky little ice house bar is opening in Houston: Going into an old fillingstation
A rumor's been circulating the last few weeks that the Creek Group — owners of Onion, Dry, Canyon and Cedar Creeks — had plans to open a new Austin-inspired ice house-style bar in Oak Forest.
While there is indeed an old filling station being converted into a fun and funky little ice house on the corner of Oak Forest and Judiway, just off 34th Street, it's not at the hands of Gary Mosley and the Creek Group. The bar, which is currently under construction and will be called Oak Forest Chill, will be operated by Matt Taormina, who also owns Richmond Chill on Richmond Avenue and Chappell Chill in Washington, Texas.
We stopped by Tuesday to have a (unannounced) peek at the place, which already contains a large, curved marble bar and copper lighting fixtures. If there are any plans to expand the interior, it doesn't look like it, although there is ample room for patio space.
True to its ice house aesthetic, Oak Forest Chill will only serve wine and beer. We're waiting on a call back from the owners to hear when the bar's opening. Stay tuned.
